![]() The Lion Inn, Blakey Ridge, North York Moors In October 1999 Paul Crossland, manager of the Lion, asked if we would help reinstate music at Blakey. The pub had a significant history in local music folklore - initiated by the previous landlord, Brian Jones, (himself a bass player of some notoriety) and rooted in the music of internationally famed "Back Door", who were resident in the early to mid-seventies. From December 1999 to June 2002 we co-produced monthly events at the Lion, and Paul proved to be one of a rare breed: the landlord who listened, learned, and implemented advice from working musicians. During this period a whole range of predominantly North East and Yorkshire based outfits played the Lion, and its reputation spread. Audiogasm 16 January 2003 Back Door Blakey was their home venue in the Acts featured (in order of appearance) were Prendo, Mostly Autumn, Gin Saw, Elephant Talk, Ray Stubbs, Breathe, Lo-Beams, Chris Helme, Neil Dalton's Blue Aces, North York Moors Chamber Orchestra, Gerry Richardson Trio, Chloe Doody Persuasion, Hamps Tramps, Reverb, Branded, Waster, Uncle Dirty, The Force, T&B Specialists, the Scooters, Elaine Palmer, Dave Dryden's Prophets, Super 8, Four Day Hombre, Banoffi, Lucas (Stone Coda), Blackstrap Molasses, Gina Dootson, Defenbaker, Dave Keegan, Stuart Jones, Halcyon Band, Hayley Hutchinson, the Infernos, Gabriel, Virginia MacNaughton, Junior Elvis, Sevenball, Brian McCarthy, Last Chance Texaco, the Hub, and the Hamsters. "The best pub in the world" (Brian Josh) "My favourite venue" (Chris Helme) ![]() Blakey Music Team 1999 - 2002 (click on photo for enlargement) l to r (back row): Anne (Door and Raffle), Mark (Branded), John (Prendo), Paul (Chef), Paul (Branded and Prendo), Rita (Waitress), Ian (Chef or Bar), Liffy (Waitress), Sarah (Waitress), Karen (Door and Admin), Pete (Branded and Prendo), Neil (Door) l to r (front row): Steve (Branded), Paul (Manager), Jason (Bar), Rob (Chef), FFay (Bar), Lisa (Waitress or Bar), Brian (Waiter) ![]() Joseph and Jordan (Central to team, but on security whilst B/W photo was being taken in music room!) By mid-summer 2002 it was clear that Paul now had sufficient confidence to run Blakey Music as a fully fledged and ongoing concern.
