BACK DOOR - "ASKIN' THE
WAY" Unique trio whose work first came to local prominence during regular Tuesday night sessions at the Lion inn, Blakey Ridge, during the early 70's. A three week stint with Chick Corea's 'Return to Forever' at Ronnie Scott's catalysed international critical acclaim. The band recorded four albums for Warner Bros. before disbanding to pursue independent highly successful careers in various aspects of the music industry. They recently re-formed to record this new album which features 6 re-recordings of classic 'Back Door' tunes and 13 brand new originals. This album is a fitting tribute to the life and work of the great Ron Aspery, composer and saxophonist, (1943 - 2003). DAVE MacRAE - "SOME
HISTORY" New Zealander Dave MacRae's personal history includes a couple of years with the Buddy Rich Band, touring the world and accompanying Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, and Anita O'Day. A move to England early 70's found him a place in Ian Carr's 'Nucleus' followed by stints with the Mike Gibb's Orchestra, Mike Westbrook Band, Back Door and Matching Mole. He also appeared regularly at Ronnie Scott's Club with Ronnie's Quintet, Clarke Terry, Chet Baker, Ernie Wilkins, Johny Griffin, Clifford Jordan, The Gil Evans Orchestra and singers, Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross, Ernestine Anderson and long time collaborator, Joy Yates (with whom he formed the fusion band 'Pacific Eardrum'). Loads of TV and film work too ......... Now he's back in the antipodes working at the Australian Institute of Music and still touring regularly Some History indeed..... This album is Dave's first CD on purely his own behalf. He's accompanied by Gary Holgate on bass, with Andrew Gander and Felix Bloxsom on drums.
