GIG PROMOTION

We've found this checklist useful when advising venues,
as a means of establishing and developing a relationship with new venues,
and when advising bands how to promote their gigs

 
  PRE-PRODUCTION, PRODUCTION, AND RESEARCH GUIDE  
 

PRE - PRODUCTION

1. LICENCING:

make sure all appropriate licences are in place

Entertainment - local council

PRS - licencing of public performance of songs
(e.g. live or off radio / album / juke box)

PPL - licensing of public perfomance of recorded material

2. CLIENTELE

Identify who the intended audience is

Advertise availability B&B, bar meals, and camping

3. PROGRAMME

Divise initial (two to three months) programme and maintain continuity


4. CONTRACTS

Agree draft contract for bands / artists and policy around "double - headers" or "support" acts (can't stand the term).

Agree policy for payment of artists - straight fee or combination of
fee / guarantee / percentage of box - office / raffle

5. PUBLICITY / PROMOTION

Production ( set-up/ typesetting / print master copy / photocopying)enue logo / identity / artwork

Posters - list sites - schedule distribution

Quarterly Newsletter - including history - copy / interviews / reviews

Mailing list

Phone list

e-mail contacts

Press (examples for Moors based productions)

Weekly:
Malton Gazette & Herald, Ryedale Mercury, Teesside Evening Gazette, Whitby Gazette, York Evening Press, Scarborough Evening News, Northern Echo, etc

National Listings:
Guardian, Times, New Musical Express etc.

Monthly: jazz uk, Charm, Keep it Live, Artscene, What's on (york), Parish and Community Magazines, Get Rhythm, YourK Music, etc.

Record distribution (radio / local record stores / internet)

On-going promotion / development and production / distribution schedule for posters, press, flyers, and mailshots

Future programming - schedule / timetable
check demos / mailing / requests for gigs from bands
phone calls - ensure someone in place to take calls from potential bands and potential audience

PRODUCTION / ORGANISATION COSTS
